German adjective endings
Level A2–B1
Adjective endings after der, after ein and with no article, with the mistakes learners make most often.
Nach bestimmtem Artikel (A2)
after der, das, die, and after dieser, jeder, welcher, alle
After sein an adjective has no ending: Der Rock ist neu. Before a noun it has one: der neue Rock. The Kasus comes from the verb or the preposition: see cases and articles.
| maskulin | neutral | feminin | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | der neue Rock | das neue Kleid | die neue Hose | die neuen Schuhe |
| Akkusativ | den neuen Rock | das neue Kleid | die neue Hose | die neuen Schuhe |
| Dativ | dem neuen Rock | dem neuen Kleid | der neuen Hose | den neuen Schuhen |
| Genitiv | des neuen Rocks | des neuen Kleids | der neuen Hose | der neuen Schuhe |
-e in five cells: Nominativ maskulin, neutral and feminin, and Akkusativ neutral and feminin. -en in all the others. The Dativ, the Genitiv and the Plural are always -en.
Nach unbestimmtem Artikel (A2)
after ein, kein, and the possessives mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer
| maskulin | neutral | feminin | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | ein neuer Rock | ein neues Kleid | eine neue Hose | keine neuen Schuhe |
| Akkusativ | einen neuen Rock | ein neues Kleid | eine neue Hose | keine neuen Schuhe |
| Dativ | einem neuen Rock | einem neuen Kleid | einer neuen Hose | keinen neuen Schuhen |
| Genitiv | eines neuen Rocks | eines neuen Kleids | einer neuen Hose | keiner neuen Schuhe |
Three cells differ from the first table: Nominativ maskulin and neutral, and Akkusativ neutral. Here ein has no ending, so the adjective takes the ending of der or das: der Rock → ein neuer Rock, das Kleid → ein neues Kleid.
ein has no plural. With kein or a possessive the plural is -en, as in the first table: meine neuen Schuhe. With no word in front, use the table under Ohne Artikel: neue Schuhe.
Typical mistakes (A2)
| Not | But | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Das Kleid ist schön. | After sein there is no ending. | |
| ein neuer Rock | ein has no ending, so the adjective takes -er. | |
| mit dem neuen Kleid | After an article, the Dativ is always -en. | |
| die neuen Schuhe | After an article, the Plural is always -en. |
Ohne Artikel (B1)
no article, or after a number, viele, wenige, einige, mehrere
| maskulin | neutral | feminin | Plural | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominativ | frischer Kaffee | frisches Brot | frische Milch | frische Eier |
| Akkusativ | frischen Kaffee | frisches Brot | frische Milch | frische Eier |
| Dativ | frischem Kaffee | frischem Brot | frischer Milch | frischen Eiern |
No article, so the adjective takes its ending. It is the same ending as the definite article: der → frischer Kaffee, das → frisches Brot, dem → mit frischem Brot.
Where you see it: food and drink (Ich trinke gern schwarzen Tee), plurals with no article (neue Kollegen), and after numbers and viele, wenige, einige (zwei kleine Kinder, viele nette Leute).
Good to know (B1)
- Adjectives as nouns (capital letter, same endings): der Deutsche, ein Deutscher, die Deutschen. The same for der Erwachsene, der Bekannte, der Verwandte, der Angestellte.
- etwas, nichts, viel (+ adjective as a noun, -es): etwas Neues, nichts Besonderes, viel Gutes. After alles: alles Gute.
- Spelling changes (hoch, teuer, dunkel): hoch → ein hoher Turm, teuer → ein teures Auto, dunkel → ein dunkles Zimmer. rosa, lila, super never change: ein rosa Kleid.
- Two adjectives (both take the ending): ein großer, heller Raum; mit kaltem, frischem Wasser. Comparatives and superlatives too: ein besserer Job, der schönste Tag.
