How these words get used

Announcements and departure boards use Gleis plus a number: Abfahrt von Gleis 3. The Bahnsteig is the physical platform you stand on. die Bahn can mean the railway company, a train, or a tram, and context sorts it out.

The three boarding verbs split in a sentence: Ich steige in Köln um, Wir steigen hier aus. In the infinitive they stay in one piece: Sie müssen umsteigen.

In some cities a paper Fahrkarte is only valid once you stamp it, which is what entwerten means. An unstamped ticket counts as no ticket at a Kontrolle, and inspectors often wear plain clothes. The Deutschlandticket covers local and regional transport across the country, but not long-distance ICE and IC trains. When a line is closed for works, look for Ersatzverkehr: replacement buses.
